Disk Quota Warnings – FAQ

If you’ve received an email from your web host warning that your hosting account is approaching its disk quota limit, you’re not alone. It’s one of the more common support queries we receive — and the good news is that it’s almost always straightforward to resolve. Here’s what you need to know.

What Does a Disk Quota Warning Mean?

Your web hosting account has a fixed amount of storage space (the “disk quota”) allocated to it. This space is shared across everything stored in your account: your website files (themes, plugins, images, videos), database content, and — often the biggest culprit — email.

A disk quota warning means you’re approaching that limit, typically at 80–90% capacity. If you hit 100%, several things stop working.

What Happens If My Disk is Full?

When your hosting account reaches its disk quota limit:

  • Emails will bounce — incoming emails will be rejected and senders will receive a delivery failure notice. You may not realise this is happening until a client tells you they couldn’t reach you.
  • Forms may stop working — contact forms and other web forms that send email notifications will silently fail.
  • Your website may display errors — WordPress and other CMS platforms may fail to write temporary files they need to function correctly.
  • Backups may fail — automated backup systems typically need free space to write their backup archives.

It’s worth taking a disk quota warning seriously rather than ignoring it.

Four Options to Resolve a Disk Quota Warning

1. Upgrade Your Hosting Plan

The simplest long-term solution is to upgrade to a hosting plan with more storage. Contact your hosting provider or, if your website is hosted through Blue Platypus, get in touch with us and we’ll review your options. Hosting upgrades typically cost a modest amount per month and instantly give you more headroom.

2. Delete Unnecessary Files

If your site has been running for a while, it may have accumulated unnecessary files:

  • Old theme and plugin installations that were deactivated but never removed
  • Unused media files in your WordPress Media Library
  • Old backup archives stored on the server (these should ideally be stored offsite)
  • Duplicate images from previous migrations or redesigns

A WordPress plugin like WP-Sweep or Media Cleaner can help identify unused media files safely.

3. Manage Your Email Storage

Email is often the single largest contributor to disk quota problems, particularly if you’ve been storing years of messages on the server. Options include:

  • Download and archive old emails to your local computer using an email client like Outlook or Thunderbird, then delete them from the server
  • Set up email forwarding to a Gmail or Microsoft 365 account, which provides effectively unlimited storage
  • Delete large attachments — search your inbox for emails with attachments and review them for deletion
  • Empty your Trash and Spam folders, which often hold large amounts of deleted mail that still count against your quota

4. Check Usage via cPanel

If your hosting account uses cPanel (the most common control panel), you can log in and view a breakdown of exactly where your disk space is being used. The Disk Usage tool shows you which directories are consuming the most space, making it easy to identify the culprit.

Look for:

  • /public_html/wp-content/uploads/ — WordPress media files
  • /mail/ — email stored on server
  • /backups/ or similar — old backup archives
