Disk Quota Warnings – FAQ
If you have received a Disk Quota Warning email from us stating that “disk quota” or “disk capacity” is nearing capacity or is full, you might be wondering what action you need to take. The following information should help you work out the best course of action.
Can I ignore these emails?
These emails do require your action. There are a few options, and they are outlined below.
What does “Disk Capacity” mean?
“Disk capacity” refers to the maximum files / data that can be stored as part of your designated hosting plan. For example if your hosting plan allows you up to 2000MB (2GB) of storage. Your hosting account could include your website files, emails, database data and even other applications stored, and some of these files build up over time. Emails are often the culprit it you are on an older setup
What happens if my account reaches full capacity?
If your storage capacity is reached, your website will generally remain live but no further files can be stored. This could mean:
- Email outage: Depending on your email setup, emails could be rejected since there is no more space to store incoming mail. The ability to send email using your hosting account may also be unavailable to you.
- Website issues: If you try to add new data, photos etc. to your website you may experience issues as the hosting account is full. Similarly, if your website allows users to login or purchase, it may restrict them from doing so because new data requires more space.
What are my options to increase disk quota capacity?
Upgrade your hosting – moving up a hosting level provides you with more storage space. If you are upgrading to the next level of hosting mid-year, we pro-rata the increase. We recommend this as a “quick fix” but longer term you may want to consider your best storage options.
Delete unwanted files – you can clean up unwanted email files and website files by logging into your cPanel. Emails you may want to delete include: Sent, Spam, Trash, any that are already saved locally on your own PC and any with huge attachments like video, or image heavy documents. In your web files easy storage space is recovered when you delete old versions of the website, old backups and occasionally even malware files.
Delete emails – emails are often the culprit if you have an old setup, taking up a lot of storage. As we get more and more emails every day, the web storage fills up. This means it is time to look at migrating your email to a more modern setup such as Google Workspace or Office 365 which will enable you to delete all emails from your website hosting.
How do I check storage capacity?
Simply log in to your cPanel by going to www.yourbusiness.com.au/cpanel. If you do not have your username and password, please email support@blueplatypus.com.au.
